Peru is commonly divided into three broad geographical zones – coast, highlands and Amazon forest – and orchids can be found in all three regions, from less than 100 metres above sea level to altitudes of 4,800 metres.
In the 32,592 hectare Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary alone, more than 250 orchids have been recorded, although experts believe that further research may reveal double that number of species within the Sanctuary’s borders.
The Patacancha Valley, high above the Sacred Valley of the Incas and a haven for traditional weaving communities, is also renowned for its orchids.
