Peru’s rugged geography makes it one of the best adventure travel and sport destinations in South America.
Cusco and the neighbouring Apurimac region offer some of the most exciting rafting and kayaking experiences in South America, with something for everyone, from novice to expert.
White-water rafting enthusiasts rate the Apurimac River, whose name in Quechua means “the god who speaks”, among the top ten rafting destinations in the world, and it is on the Apurimac that the famous Acobamba Abyss, made famous in the book “Running the Amazon”, is encountered. The Apurimac canyon is a cyclopean landscape of arid hills topped by snow-capped peaks, sheer rock walls and gigantic boulders smoothed by the river as it forces its way towards the Amazon.
For a less demanding alternative more suitable for novices, the Urubamba River, the sacred river which for the Incas was the terrestrial counterpart of the Milky Way, offers more manageable white-water rafting through the incomparable scenery of the fertile Sacred Valley, visiting a number of Inca ruins along the way.
Other adventure sport options in the Cusco region include hiking and trekking, mountain biking, horse riding, hang gliding, paragliding and even bungee jumping. |
