After an early departure from Cuzco we will be driven to Calca, and then up to the Lares Pass. We will meet your porters at Paucarpata, a small attractive village with a colonial church in its main square. It is here that the trek begins. The first stop will be the Inca village of Choquecancha, where you will have the opportunity to visit the homes of some of the local weavers before continuing to the village of Lares, where we will camp. (Lunch - Dinner)
Day 2
:
Lares - Qochayoc
After breakfast the trek continues through the village of Cuncany, where villagers display their tapestries and intricate woven blankets. Llamas and alpacas will be a constant feature of the journey as we continue to the camp at Qochayoc.
(Breakfast - Lunch - Dinner)
Day 3
:
Qochayoc - Pacchayoc
This is a spectacular day's trekking, through the Urubamba mountain range. The trail will take us past Inca walls and tombs and you will have the opportunity to spot a number of Andean birds, including condors. Camp at Pacchayoc.
(Breakfast - Lunch - Dinner)
Day 4
:
Pacchayoc / Wiñay Wayna / Machu Picchu
The morning will begin with a short trek to a designated meeting point where a van will be waiting to transfer us to the train station at Ollantaytambo.
We then take the train to Km.104, from where we hike up to Wiñay Wayna and follow the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
On reaching Km.104 we cross the Urubamba river and head for the archaeological complex of Choquesuysuy. Here the trail climbs slowly to halfway up the mountain where we arrive at Wiñay Wayna, an Inca site surrounded by lush vegetation. We will pass a high waterfall where we will be able to cool off.
Wiñay Wayna was originally inhabited by farmers who used terraces to reclaim the steep slopes for agriculture. We will encounter about twenty constructions, which have all been recently restored, as well as an irrigation system and a splendid Inca temple. That afternoon we will continue along the trail to Machu Picchu, enjoying along the way the spectacular scenery, with the river far below, and the snowy peaks emerging from the surrounding cloud forest.
Following a path which is very narrow in places, we eventually arrive at the Sun Gate above Machu Picchu from where we will get our first glimpse of the ruins below us. From here it is a forty-minute walk to Machu Picchu.
(Breakfast – Box lunch)
Day 5
:
Machu Picchu
Guided tour of Machupicchu
We will get up early to visit this lost city which was rediscovered in 1911. Standing at the top of a steep, forested hill overlooking the Urubamba River, Machu Picchu was hidden by dense vegetation for centuries until the historian Hiram Bingham began to clear the site. Today the city has been restored and even if it has lost some of its mystery it still remains an unforgettable sight. Our tour includes a visit to the temples, plazas, palaces, watercourses and residential areas and will also leave you time to explore the ruins on your own.
In the afternoon return to Cusco by train, transfer to hotel.
