Frequent flyers don't realise how carbon intensive their journeys are. Just to put it into perspective: a flight from London to Madrid uses a quarter of an individual’s entire sustainable carbon year (i.e. the amount of fossil fuel a person can use in every aspect of their lifestyle over 12 months without contributing to climate change). A flight from London to Sydney uses two and a half times this ration.
The good news is that you can “pay back the planet” for the carbon footprint produced by your journey by making a donation to one of the many projects run by www.climatecare.org.
One person’s return flight from London to Lima, for example, produces 2.56 tons of carbon dioxide, which can be offset with a donation of less than $40 to one of Climate Care’s projects around the world.
Enter the Climate Care website at www.climatecare.org to calculate the carbon footprint produced by your international flight, and then make a donation.
